Cravings and Hunger

Standing in the kitchen looking in a cupboard, then another, and then the fridge. What am I looking for? Something to satisfy the craving, the hunger for something sweet. Our physical cravings are so paralleled to the spiritual realm.

Ps 27:4 One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord
And to meditate in His temple.

I have discovered that a key to growing in intimacy with God is to develop a craving and hunger for Him. There are times when we try to ignore the cravings of the spirit, and if we ignore it enough we loose our sensitivity to what we are really craving. This is just like when we are craving things in the physical, they are often signs that we need something, a specific vitamin or mineral, to meet a real need. Our cravings in the spirit should also draw us to a place of seeing our need for God and allowing it to be met in Him.

So what are we craving of God?

His sweetness?
Ps 199:103 How sweet are Your words to my taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

His goodness?
Ps 100:5 For the Lord is good;
His lovingkindness is everlasting
And His faithfulness to all generations.

His love?
Rom 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Take time to listen to your spirit today and recognize what you are craving of God. Then go eat! He loves to give us a banquet.

Song of Songs 2:4 He has brought me to his banquet hall,
And his banner over me is love.

I like the comparison between physical and spiritual craving, Lee-Anne. I remember craving a hot fudge sundae when i was pregnant. Nothing else would do until I got that (and not just ANY sundae either –only from a specific restaurant). This ties in with rest also. With work piled up for tutoring and then there’s always weeding and all the projects of a new house … the spiritual cravings can get pushed aside. It occurred to me I could do both tother …. do weeding with God.
